A dentist must evaluate the problem to determine the diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Depending on the findings, care may involve an examination, digital imaging, restorative treatment, root canal therapy, treatment for infection, or an extraction.
Safe first steps while arranging care
- For bleeding, place clean gauze over the area and apply gentle pressure.
- For swelling, place a cold compress against the outside of the face.
- Handle a knocked-out permanent tooth by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it gently without scrubbing, keep it moist, and seek instructions immediately.
- Collect pieces of a broken tooth or restoration and bring them with you if possible.
- Do not place aspirin directly against a tooth or gum tissue.
