What to Know About Teeth Extraction

Sep 9 • 2 minute read

Teeth are incredible durable parts of our body, but they’re not perfect. Whether by accident or by infection, the health of your teeth can be compromised, requiring removal in some cases. Teeth can also be knocked out or damaged and simply need to be fully removed to protect oral health and function. Sometimes modern dental practices cannot save the natural tooth, and leaving an infected tooth in place is dangerous to other teeth and tissue. In these instances, extraction may be recommended when a tooth is too infected to be saved, or if root canal therapy has repeatedly failed to stop infection.

How Extraction Works

The extraction procedure is simple and painless with proper care. Dr. Achikeh uses a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and the treatment area. Using a tool called an elevator, Dr. Achikeh will loosen the tooth from surrounding hard and soft tissue. While patients are numbed to prevent any discomfort, it’s normal to experience some pressure as the tooth is removed.

After the tooth is extracted, Dr. Achkieh will clean the socket and remove remaining tissue to prepare your smile for restoration or healing. Sometimes the tooth is positioned incorrectly or has decayed in a way that requires our team to complete a more complex preparation process to extract the tooth. In the cases of complex wisdom teeth extraction, additional treatments to aid in patient comfort can be utilized, while simple extraction may only require local anesthetic.

Post-Extraction Treatment Options

Our Silver Spring practice provides solutions to the gaps caused by extraction of permanent teeth, especially those in your smile line. Dental implants are a possible option that replaces the missing tooth with a synthetic root that fuses to bone tissue over time. Made of titanium, dental implants are veritable foundations for restorations that look just like real teeth. From implant-supported bridges to custom-made crowns, individuals missing many or single teeth can have their smile restored through implant dentistry. All restorations are color-matched to existing teeth and become seamless parts of your smile, like teeth were never extracted in the first place.

Dr. Achikeh and his team provide restorations using advanced 3-D technology that plans out the entire procedure, from extraction to implant installation. Our office is located in The Point, right next to the Bank of America in Silver Springs. If you are suffering from tooth pain or have missing teeth, come to our office for the more information about complex and simple teeth extraction, as well as restorative treatment options.
